Boldy James Interview at Heaven Studios

Boldy James

In 2022, I had the opportunity to interview Boldy James at Heaven Studios. It was a beautiful time to be involved in hip hop at the ground level, gritty, unpredictable, and tactical.

Street Lord Juan showed me so much love, we would plan and plot on magazine ideas, interviews and strategies to elevate Detroit Hip Hop after he got home. After long days in the studio, and even later nights, we would take the long way back, switching routes, turn after turn, making sure nobody was following us.

I understood where he was coming from, the stress, the paranoia, the weight that life carries, as we both came from a similar past, even though I never told him I had my own run in the game. Some things do not need to be said.

Life Inside Detroit’s Hip Hop Circle

Imagine living your dream as a hip hop journalist. Before my Boldy James interview, a typical day would be Juan asking who you wanted to interview, making the call, and if they were in the city at that time, they would pull up for an interview. That’s the kind of respect a call from Street Lord Juan carries.

Boldy James Interview at Heaven Studios

As I reflect on the Boldy James interview I did, I promise one day it will get released, a few things stand out. It was an early fall Saturday morning, and Boldy showed up on the high-tech security system, multiple camera feeds spread across one screen, driving a beat-up minivan, the kind of car you wouldn’t expect but made perfect sense once he stepped out.

When he walked into the studio, the first thing he said was, “Where’s Royce?” and his next words were, “Can we smoke in here?” I was not sure what I expected, since I had never met Boldy before that point, but it was one of those moments that sticks with you.

Why Boldy James Still Stands Out

Moments like that are what separate Boldy James. No image to maintain, no performance, just presence. The same energy you hear in the music shows up in real life.

Here’s a few clips form the archives.
